About the Author

portraitI'VE WRITTEN two traditionally published novels, Darkest Desire (1998, Ecco Press) and Lost Souls (1988, Available Press). Darkest Desire was also published in Germany and Japan, sold to an Italian publisher, and optioned by a US film production company.

Recently I've left that part of the publishing world behind, and have moved to eBooks that are entirely under my control. My novels Mermaid in Vegas, Thereafter and Valentine's Cafe are all available in eBook form via Amazon and Books2Read: other ebook formats.

I've spent most of the past 30 years working for a variety of publications, ranging from the rabidly hippie to the hugely corporate. I started out in 1975 in a Denver-based, collectively-run news service for alternative papers. Decades later I owned and operated the Frogtown Times, a newspaper for my St. Paul neighborhood, which is the first stop for most new immigrants to Minnesota. In between, I worked at papers and magazines such as the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, the Chicago Reader, and Health Magazine, and served as editor of the Minneapolis weekly, City Pages. I've also freelanced for numerous magazines, including Outside and the New York Times Book Review.

I'm an active participant in the affairs of our neighborhood. I've served on various non-profit boards and citizen committees, and have recently been chair of a neighborhood group that is building a local park and demonstration farm. I've been a board member of a local paddling organization, am a certified kayak instructor, and have built numerous replicas of Greenland and Alaskan-style skin-on-frame kayaks.
